Whirlpool and Amazon show that France is able to attract large investors

On 2 October, the President of the Republic travelled to the Amiens metropolis, particularly visiting Amazon’s new logistics centre and the Whirlpool factory site. Both of these cases show that France has the ability to transform its industry and attract major foreign investors.

The case of Whirlpool, together with Amazon’s opening of a logistics centre in the Amiens agglomeration, which is expected to create more than 500 direct jobs with permanent contracts in the region by 2020, show that the State and local authorities are able to work together with economic actors and employees to transform industrial activities and attract large investors to France.

Thanks to the quality of social dialogue and support of public authorities, an industrial recovery plan ensure that the vast majority of employees will keep their jobs at the Whirlpool site, which will be able to turn towards future markets including the production of electronic parcel lockers and battery chargers for bicycles and cars.

For the President of the Republic, the answer to industrial problems and unemployment lies in reforming the labour market and in financing the French economy in order to promote productive investment and innovation.

This is the purpose of the ordinances that have been adopted to reform the labour code and develop social dialogue. It is also the purpose of the provisions of the 2018 budget relating to business and capital taxation (reduction of corporate tax, introduction of the single flat-rate tax on capital income and replacement of the ISF (French wealth tax) with a real-estate tax).

France must be a country "where we help entrepreneurs who assume all their responsibilities", the President of the Republic said. It must also be a country that "invests in training which leads to stable employment". Future apprenticeship and vocational training reforms will meet this objective.
