The official statistical system produces quantitative information that constitutes the official data on which public debate will center. It constructs and computes the main indices and indicators for assessing the demographic, economic, social, and environmental conditions of France and its population.
INSEEThe National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques - INSEE) collects, produces, analyses, and disseminates information on the French economy and society. INSEE is responsible for coordinating France's official statistical service, which comprises INSEE and ministerial statistical offices (Services statistiques ministériels - SSMs) . It represents France in European Union institutions and international bodies in charge of statistical harmonisation. INSEE is also engaged in higher education and research via GENES (Groupe des Écoles Nationales d'Économie et Statistique).
INEDThe National Institute for Demographic Studies (Institut national d'études démographiques - INED) studies the populations of the world and of regions or countries -in particular Europe and France- using the tools of demography in association with those of other disciplines such as history, geography, sociology, anthropology, economics, biology and epidemiology. It conducts researches on universal phenomena such as births, unions, migrations and mortality, and its researchers work in a wide variety of fields, ranging from contraception and abortion to migration trends, marginal populations, life expectancy and so on.
CNISThe National Council for Statistical Information (Conseil national de l’information statistique - CNIS) acts as a forum for consultations between producers and users of official statistics, ranging from identification of areas to be covered to evaluation of surveys performed. The CNIS annual report provides a detailed follow-up of the opinions issued in the previous year and assessments of the annual and medium-term work programs carried out by statistics producers.
The web Portal of official statistics has been established at the request of Cnis to enable the public to have better access to all the statistical information produced by official statistics.
Official Statistical AuthorityThe Official Statistical Authority (Autorité de la statistique publique - ASP), the most recently established player, is tasked with guaranteeing the independence of official statisticians affirmed by law, along the lines of existing practices in several European countries. The Authority’s mission is to ensure compliance with the principles of the EU Statistics Code of Practice promulgated in 2005. In particular, it oversees the application of the principles of professional independence, objectivity, relevance, and quality at each stage in the design, production, and dissemination of official statistics.
