Tuna Altinel: Frédérique Vidal receives the French support committee

On 24 June 2019, the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation received the French support committee for the liberation of Tuna Altinel, a lecturer at Lyon 1 University who has been in prison in Turkey for more than a month now.

The Minister took the opportunity to once again express her deep concern as to Mr Altinel's situation. She assured members of the support committee that France would do everything possible to obtain his release and enable his return to the University where he teaches. She reminded them that she had sent a letter to her Turkish counterpart over a month ago.

During this meeting, the Minister commended Lyon 1 University's decision to grant Mr Altinel functional protection. She also thanked civil society for its commitment and encouraged its spokespersons to organise an event at the National Assembly, to which she could lend her active support.

On a final note, the Minister stated that it was essential that freedom of expression and academic freedom be respected in Turkey as elsewhere and shared her grave concern with regard to the situation of all academics currently being subjected to legal proceedings or prevented from fulfilling their duties.
