New guidelines for the Institut français

On Monday 13 January, Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and Franck Riester, Minister of Culture, convened the fourth Strategic Advisory Council meeting of the Institut français.

The members of this Strategic Advisory Council – MPs, elected local officials, representatives of professional organisations and institutions as well as qualified individuals – discussed the main guidelines underpinning the Institut français' draft agreement setting out the targets and resources for the period 2020-2022.

At this meeting, the Strategic Advisory Council underscored the core mission of the Institut français, the public institution responsible for promoting French culture internationally, in support of soft diplomacy, and its role assisting the cultural and cooperative network abroad, especially the one bringing together Instituts français and Alliances françaises.

Institut français
The Institut français is a public industrial and commercial institution, founded by the Act of 27 July 2010 on external State action and placed under the dual supervision of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture. Abroad, France relies on a network of 98 Instituts français and more than 800 Alliances françaises to develop its soft power policy, which the Institut français helps to deliver and strengthen.
Institut français worldwide

Under the agreement setting out the targets and resources, the Institut français is asked to:
  • continue advancing the influence of French and French-speaking creative industries and culture;
  • promote the French language as part of the plan to promote the French language and multilingualism, presented by the President of the Republic in March 2018;
  • strengthen its programmes and tools supporting dialogue between civil societies and cultures;
  • strive for coordination between the stakeholders involved in promoting French culture internationally and in enhancing cooperation with local authorities and European programmes.
