2020 European Heritage Days

Heritage and Education: Learning for Life!

The European Heritage Days, a key calendar fixture for European citizens to enjoy their shared heritage, will go ahead on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2020 on this year’s theme: “Heritage and Education: Learning for Life!”. All the necessary safety precautions will be taken across sites for visitors.

During this weekend, public and private owners of historical monuments, members of heritage protection and promotion associations, heritage curators and conservator-restorers, tour guides and chief architects of historical monuments all over France will look forward to welcoming visitors in keeping with the applicable health recommendations. In that respect, a health guide – available here – has been sent out to all participating sites.

With everyone’s safety uppermost in mind, all those involved in these 37th European Heritage Days will ensure strict compliance with the Government’s health guidance.

The French Beauty Companies Association (FEBEA) has teamed up with the Ministry of Culture for the European Heritage Days 2020, and cosmetics firms will thus be supplying the thousands of cultural sites nationwide with free hand sanitiser to enable them to welcome visitors under the safest possible conditions in health terms.

Over and above these protection measures, this year many sites will be organising tours in small groups and on a registration basis.

The initiative "Look up!", designed for schoolchildren and students from infant school right through to sixth-form college, is also set to take place under the same conditions on 18 September. This will give youngsters a closer insight into their rich local heritage, in complete safety, under their teachers’ supervision.

This key September date for the cultural agenda will once again bring the full wealth and diversity of heritage around us within reach of not only history, architecture, science, art and nature buffs but also the general public.

The European Heritage Days are organised by the Ministry of Culture, under the joint patronage of the Council of Europe and European Commission. Public and private owners of historical monuments rally behind the initiative each year.
