Generation Equality Forum to take place soon in Paris

In July 2020, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, France will host the Generation Equality Forum. On this occasion, France will lead a coalition to defend sexual and reproductive health rights around the world.

France plays a leading role on the European and international stage, particularly in eliminating the global scourge of gender-based and sexual violence. Accordingly, on 3 March 2020 and at the initiative of parents of femicide victims, the Simone Veil Prize was presented to the "Vivas Nos Queremos" group by the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Minister of State for Gender Equality and the Fight Against Discrimination, attached to the Prime Minister. In addition, the President of the Republic has created a €120 million fund to support non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Southern countries.

France, a world leader in feminist diplomacy

In taking over the presidency of the G7, France has engaged the seven member countries in the Biarritz Partnership for Gender Equality, with the aim that each country implements a law which is among the best in the world in terms of promoting women’s rights. A joint declaration has underscored the ambition to make gender equality a major global cause, after the President of the Republic declared it a national worthy cause of the five-year presidential term. France’s presidency of the G7 has thus set out a resolutely feminist and innovative direction by calling for the full participation of women and girls in all spheres of society and in particular by working to empower women in Africa (AFAWA, We-FI).

Following the strong commitments made by all G7 countries, including the United States, during the French presidency, France invites the world to meet in July 2020 in Paris for the Generation Equality Forum, which marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, a worldwide founding declaration. On this occasion, France will lead a coalition to defend sexual and reproductive health rights around the world.

Action taken by the Government has ensured gender equality is a key political issue throughout the year. It is now up to us to ensure this Republican value is truly upheld, everywhere and for everyone.
