France supports Asia Bibi

On 7 November 2018 Marlène Schiappa, Minister of State for Gender Equality and the Fight against Discrimination, attached to the Prime Minister, welcomed the General Secretary of the Asia Bibi International Committee, Anne-Isabelle Tollet, and Chief Secretary, Myriam Masure.

A Christian woman and mother sentenced to death for blasphemy, Asia Bibi has been acquitted of all charges levelled against her by Pakistan's Supreme Court. In Asia Bibi's interests, we would like to see this decision swiftly put into practice.

Since 2010, France has drawn constant attention to the fact that the notion of "blasphemy offence" runs counter to the freedoms of religion, expression and opinion defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which Pakistan has ratified.

Together with its European and international partners, France is looking into what form of support or reception could be afforded to her and her family in line with their wishes.

The President of the Republic and Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, concerned about Asia Bibi's situation, have been following this case closely from the outset. Marlène Schiappa has devoted a great deal of time to working with Anne-Isabelle Tollet on supporting Asia Bibi. They particularly put up the portrait of Asia Bibi on the City Hall in Le Mans as well as other towns and cities across France in a bid to raise awareness of Asia Bibi's fate.
