European Commission's positive responses in support of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors

Didier Guillaume, Minister of Agriculture and Food, would like to thank the European Commission for its positive responses in support of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors during the Covid-19 crisis.

The fisheries and aquaculture sectors have been severely disrupted by the fallout of the health crisis that has spread across all EU Member States.

During the European Council’s video conference between agriculture and fisheries ministers, held on 25 March 2020, Didier Guillaume and his European counterparts asked European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius for immediate measures under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) to help the sectors to cope with the disruptive impacts on their market.

Today, he applauds the support package which the European Commission has just proposed and thanks Commissioner Sinkevicius for his responsiveness.

This package includes the requests that France had made, and which bore, in particular, on:
  • the possibility of applying the support mechanism in the case of the temporary cessation of fishing activities,
  • reactivation of the storage support mechanism, which had been suspended since the end of 2018,
  • activation of the support measures for aquaculture farmers, with all of the measures subject to the more flexible management architecture of the EMFF.
It is also very important that all of these measures can, as requested, be retroactively eligible and apply for the duration of the crisis.

This proposal must now be submitted and adopted by the European Parliament and the Council as soon as possible.
