2 new ministers will resolutely continue the transformation policies undertaken by their predecessors

There was a Government reshuffle on 4 September 2018. Following her resignation presented the same day, Laura Flessel was replaced as Minister of Sport by the former swimmer Roxana Maracineanu, while François de Rugy took over from Nicolas Hulot as Ministre d’État, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition.

Ministry for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition

On 28 August, Nicolas Hulot announced his decision to leave the Government team. The Prime Minister thanked him for the work he had carried out with the Government to implement the President of the Republic’s commitments.

François de Rugy’s appointment brings in a man who, as the Prime Minister reminded him, has always been committed to ecology and who has acquired “undoubted political weight as former President of the National Assembly”.

Édouard Philippe stressed that the new Minister was “someone who wanted to commit himself to a rationale of transformation, achievement and explanation” of what the Government is doing. This being so, he will act on behalf of ecology with method, determination and perseverance, bringing the goals of the economy and of ecology into line with each other.

Laura Flessel stated that her resignation was for personal reasons.

She should be congratulated for the major achievements that marked her 16 months in office, in particular:

  • Paris’ winning bid for the 2024 Olympic Games (olympic and paralympic law enacted in March)
  • The progress made in combating discrimination in sport
  • The actions undertaken for development of women’s sports.
We should also welcome the arrival of Roxana Maracineanu, another woman with a memorable sporting career behind her, who possesses all the skills required to continue with the work underway, with longstanding commitment to the general interest to her credit as a regional councillor and community leader.
