Equality is a core value of the Republic, which is why we should not abandon but rather increase action for equality between girls and boys in schools. This is the conclusion reached by the assessment of the pioneering programme "Les ABCD de l'égalité" (The ABCD of equality), which paved the way for a new action plan presented by Benoît Hamon and Najat Vallaud-Belkacem.
The inspection department of the French National Education submitted an assessment to Benoît Hamon of the pioneering programme "Les ABCD de l'égalité", trialled in 10 regional education authorities in 2013-2014. An overall positive assessment which recommends that not only should action for equality between girls and boys in schools not be abandoned, but that it should be increased.
This paved the way for the definition of a new Action Plan for equality between girls and boys in schools, presented by Benoît Hamon and Najat Vallaud-Belkacem on Monday 30 June. A plan designed to be more ambitious with the integration of the principle of equality between girls and boys into school curricula. It shall come into force as of the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.
Expanding training on equality between girls and boys
The some 25,000 students trained every year in teacher training colleges (EPSE - écoles supérieures du professorat et de l'éducation) will now receive training on equality between girls and boys in schools. Educational tools will be made available in ESPEs to this end.
The future directors, head teachers, national education inspectors, academic inspectors and regional education inspectors will also take a module on equality between girls and boys in schools as part of their initial training.
This training will be a priority for the 2015 national training plan as well as academic and departmental training plans within the framework of continuing training through academic seminars. Lastly, distance training courses will be offered by the Ministry of National Education to both primary and secondary school teachers thanks to the m@gistère platform.
An educational kit available to teachers
In order to help teachers prepare and coordinate enhanced educational sessions aimed to transmit the value of equality between girls and boys to pupils, an educational kit comprising resources and new tools will be made available. A new website will also be set up as of the start of the academic year to collect new educational documents and tools designed for teachers.
This new content will be available as of September 2014.
Equality between girls and boys included in school and institution projects
Educational institutions will be invited to include equality between girls and boys in schools in their institution projects, adopted by the School or Institution Council.
This will be an opportunity to include parents and to allow them to share this educational project.
