Acting for Youth

France - Acting for youthImproving the access of young generations to education, health and decent work in developing countries and ensuring their basic rights while helping these countries address the population challenge is one of France’s priorities in its international solidarity efforts. Development

France and transboundary waters

France and transboundary watersOver 40% of the world’s population lives in transboundary river basins, which account for almost 60% of global freshwater resources. Moreover, nearly one country in six depends on upstream countries for over half of its water supply. Water is, by nature, a local public good and a resource that crosses borders. This is a source of significant tension in some regions, namely Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. For this reason, France promotes international conventions that foster dialogue and support transboundary water cooperation initiatives. [2015]

Development

France’s external action in the water and sanitation sector

France’s external action in the water and sanitation sectorImproving water resource management is a challenge for sustainable development, environmental protection and food and energy security. Water resource tensions arise from competing domestic, agricultural, industrial and energy uses and can be heightened where water resources have to be managed in a transboundary context. Respect of national sovereignty must therefore go alongside the concerted and responsible management of water resources and the benefits from their exploitation. Investment in the water and sanitation sector entails strong economic and social externalities by furthering public health and economic and sustainable development. [2014]
